Stem appearance

If you are unable to observe a plant in situ, you may be able to infer whether elongate stems were creeping along the substrate; roots at nodes near a stem's apexapex:
(n) the point farthest from the point of attachment; the tip (often pointed)
may indicate the plant had a creeping habit.

Note that stems floating on or near the water surface or in mid-water, may be erect, ascending, or creeping horizontally.
