Brevipalpus phoenicis species group

Dorsal opisthosomal setae f2 absent; tarsi II with 2 solenidia (one adaxial, one abaxial). Palps four segmented, setal formula 0-1-2-3(1s+2e) (s = solenidion, e = eupathidium).

Setal formula for legs I-IV (coxae to tarsi): 2-2-1-1, 1-1-2-1, 4-4-2-1, 3-3-1-1, 5-5-3-3, 9(1)-10(1)-5-5. Leg chaetotaxy: feI-II d, l', v', bv", fe III d, ev', fe IV ev'; ge I-II d, l', l", ge III-IV l'; ti I-II d, l', l", v', v", ti III-IV d, v', v".

Distribution based on confirmed specimens

Argentina

Species characters

Adult female habitus

Figures 1, 2, 3

Prodorsum

Central (Figs. 4, 5): cuticle with strong, broad areolae

Sublateral (Figs. 4, 5): posterior region with reticulation forming large cells; anterior region with short folds and wrinkles to setae v2

Opisthosoma

c1-c1 to d1-d1: cuticle with some folds or wrinkles (Fig. 6); can appear weakly reticulate (Fig. 7)

d1-d1 to e1-e1: cuticle wrinkled with a few transverse folds (Figs. 6, 7, 8)

e1-e1 to h1-h1: cuticle with a series of transverse folds, becoming weakly reticulate towards h1-h1 (Figs. 9, 10)

Sublateral: cuticle reticulate with large cells; cells slightly longitudinally elongate (Figs. 6, 8)

Palp

palp femurogenu with barbed, broad flat dorsal seta (Fig. 11)

Venter

Setae 4a-ventral plate (Figs. 12, 13): lateral cuticle verrucose, with separately formed rounded "warts" (some fusion of cells is present); central cuticle with transversely elongate "warts", often fused to form short transverse bands; elongate "warts" and transverse bands become weaker towards 4a-4a and disappear between 4a-4a

Ventral plate (Figs. 14, 15): cuticle with irregularly shaped cells or "warts"; central cells more elongate than lateral cells (Fig. 15)

Genital plate (Figs. 14, 15): cuticle with irregular transversely elongate cells, forming irregular transverse bands

Spermatheca

A fine duct terminates distally in a rounded vesicle; outer margin of vesicle with tiny projections (Fig. 16)

Hosts based on confirmed specimens

Citrus sinensis (Rutaceae)
