Size ranges for this tool are based on the longest dimension of a particular piece of a sample. Since you will generally have multiples of a particular type of specimen, measure several different pieces, and use an average measurement for your key selection. The cutoff of 5 cm was chosen simply because that split the entities within the key roughly in half. Don't worry if your sample overlaps the size ranges or occurs right on the edge between the two ranges - it is possible for a sample to fall into both categories, and the key is scored to accommodate this. This feature is intended to serve as simply another way to help narrow down the number of images you'll use to identify your particular specimen, so it is not intended to be perfectly accurate, but rather more of an average, overall estimate of the size of your specimens.
