Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., Fruct. Sem. Pl. 1: 73, t. 19, fig. 2 (1788).
The East Indian lotus bears 9-17 pistils immersed in a large, nearly flat-topped spongy receptacle, 2-9 cm in diameter, each pistil opening on the top by a large hole with fruits the size of small hazelnuts, the entire appearance as that of a top of a large shaker.
Nelumbo nucifera is native from eastern Europe to Asia and Australia.
