Juniperus virginiana L., Sp. Pl. 2: 1039 (1753).
Branches, fleshy cones, and wood shavings of eastern red-cedar sometime appear in potpourri. Leaves are both decurrent (whip) and scale. Whip leaves grow only at branchlet tips, with an elliptical or elongated gland. Scale leaves are overlapping, margins entire. Cones are dark blue to black upon drying, often with a blue glaucous coating, 3-6(-7) mm in diameter, 1-2(-3)-seeded.
Junperus virginiana is native to North America.
