Field characters

Adult female body possibly purplish-brown, nearly circular, flattened, covered by light brown test that is infused with secondary white wax; test with longitudinal mediodorsal carina intersected by transverse raised lines. Male test similar in texture and appearance, more elongate. Occurring on stems and probably leaves of host.

Validation characters

2 unusually long setae anterior of vulva, multilocular disk pores normally absent or rare on thorax; dorsum with 3 to 5 cribriform plates on each side of body; anterior and posterior spiracular setae present; posterior spiracular furrows divided; antennae 7- to 9-segmented; legs rudimentary, usually with less than 3 segments. Other characters: 8-shaped pores present; invaginated tubular ducts present; anal area with arch plate; stigmatic setae present.

Comparison

Lecanodiaspis dendrobii is similar to L. prosopidis (Maskell) by having 3 to 5 cribriform plates on each side of body; anterior and posterior spiracular setae present; posterior spiracular furrows divided; antennae 7- to 9-segmented; legs rudimentary. Lecanodiaspis dendrobii differs by having 2 long setae anterior of vulva (absent in L. prosopidis). These species may be synonyms.

U.S. quarantine notes

This species was not intercepted at U. S. ports-of-entry between 1995 and 2012. We have examined specimens taken in quarantine from Belize (Cattleya); Colombia (Cattleya); Guatemala (Laelia); Honduras (orchid); Mexico (Laelia); Panama (orchid); Venezuela (Cattleya). ScaleNet includes hosts in 7 plant families from the Nearctic (Mexico) and Neotropical zoogeographic regions. Besides L. dendrobii and L. prosopidis (Maskell), no other species of Lecanodiaspis have been intercepted at a U. S. port-of-entry.
