Field characters

According to Tokihiro (2004) this species has: body oval; slightly rounded in lateral view; with dark dorsosubmedial bare spots on intersegmental areas of thorax and abdomen, these areas forming 1 pair of dark longitudinal lines on dorsum; with 17 pairs of lateral filaments; posterior pair longest, about 1/2 as long as body. Based on the morphology of the adult female we suspect that the ovisac covers the dorsum. On foliage and fruit of host.

Validation characters

Dorsal oral-collar tubular ducts present; dorsal setae elongate, nearly as long as ventral setae; translucent pores present on hind femur and tibia, absent from coxa; without discoidal pores near eye; ventral oral-collar tubular ducts in small numbers along body margin of head and thorax.

Comparison

Pseudococcus odermatti is similar to P. comstocki and P. apodemus Williams by having dorsal oral-collar tubular ducts and long dorsal setae, but differs by lacking translucent pores on the hind coxa. Pseudococcus comstocki and P. apodemus both have translucent pores on the hind coxa.

This species was intercepted 72 times at U. S. ports-of-entry between 1995 and 2012, with specimens originating from Aruba, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, The U.S. Virgin Islands and Vietnam. It has been taken in quarantine primarily on Aglaonema and Citrus but it is occasionally collected on a few other hosts. We also have examined quarantine specimens from Bahamas (Annona, Citrus); Belize (Aglaeonema); China (Aglaeonema); Japan (Fatsia); Costa Rica (Aglaeonema); Hong Kong (Hibiscus); Puerto Rico (Melicoccus). ScaleNet lists the species from 8 families of host plants, and occurs in the Australasian, Nearctic (Florida in The United States of America), Neotropical, Oriental and Palaearctic (Japan) regions.
