Field characters

We have been unable to locate a description of the field characters for this species in the literature. Based on morphology of slide mounted female: Body oval; slightly rounded in lateral view; probably with 17 pairs of thin, lateral filaments; posterior pair longest; with ventral ovisac. On foliage and fruit of host.

Validation characters

Translucent pores on hind tibia only; usually without dorsal oral-rim tubular ducts; without oral-rim tubular duct near frontal cerarius; discoidal pores associated with eye, set in sclerotized rim; ventral oral-collar tubular ducts in clusters laterad of front and middle coxae, uncommon on head.

Comparison

Pseudococcus landoi is an unusual member of the genus Pseudococcus by usually lacking dorsal oral-rim tubular ducts; by having translucent pores restricted to hind tibia; and by lacking oral-rim tubular duct near frontal cerarius.

U.S. quarantine notes

This species was intercepted 92 times at U. S. ports-of-entry between 1995 and 2012, with specimens originating from Australia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru. It is taken at U. S. ports-of-entry primarily on banana although it occasionally has been collected on a few other hosts. We also have examined quarantine specimens from Barbados (Strelitzia); Brazil (Phaseolus, Schinus); Colombia (Artocarpus); Costa Rica (Anthurium, Codiaeum, Dieffenbachia, Musa); Domincan Republic (Sechium); Guatemala (Coffea, Musa, Zingiber); Guyana (orchid); Honduras (Musa); Mexico (Alpinia, Musa, orchid); Panama (Musa); Peru (orchid). ScaleNet lists the species from more than 15 families of host plants. It is restricted to the Neotropical and Nearctic zoogeographic regions.
