Anastrepha fraterculus (Andean morphotype)
Common name
South American fruit flyHost plants
Polyphagous, infesting at least the following families and genera:
Family | Genus / species | Common name |
Myrtaceae | Psidium guavjava P. caudatum |
guava |
Rosaceae | Eriobotrya japonica | loquat |
Prunus persica | peach | |
Rubus glaucus | blackberry, mora | |
Rubiaceae | Coffea | coffee |
Part of plant attacked: fruit.
Several morphotypes of A. fraterculus s.l. are present in the Andean countries. Their distributions are partially determined by elevation, but exact limits are not known. Different morphotypes may overlap in some areas. Many host records from this region cannot be reliably associated with a particular morphotype.
Many other host families have been reported for A. fraterculus s.l., e.g., Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Combretaceae, Ebenaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Flacourtiaceae, Juglandaceae, Lauraceae, Moraceae, Olacaceae, Oxalidaceae, Punicaceae, Rutaceae, Sapotaceae, Solanaceae, Staphyleaceae, Sterculiaceae, Vitaceae. Whether or not members of the Andean morphotype infest some of these hosts is not known.
Biogeographic region and distribution
NeotropicalSouth America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru?
Venezuela; at elevations above about 1500 m.
Adult taxonomy
Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) species complex
Hernandez-O et al. (2012, 2015) recognized eight morphotypes of Anastrepha fraterculus s.l. At least four of these are strongly supported by genetic, behavioral, and other types of data (Steck 1991, Sutton et al. 2015, Vera et al. 2006).
