A new tool for identification of pine sawflies (family Diprionidae: genus Diprion)
ITP is pleased to announce the release of Diprion ID. This interactive tool helps users identify adult pine sawflies. Pine sawflies are stout, wasp-like insects. Several species are pests of pine, with larvae both causing direct harm by defoliation and indirect harm by making pines vulnerable to other pests. Damage from pine sawfly larvae can vary from mild to severe, with these insects sometimes defoliating hundreds of hectares of pine forests. This tool includes two matrix-based Lucid identification keys, one for adult females and the other for adult males, along with associated fact sheets and an image gallery. Diprion ID will be a critical asset for early detection, monitoring, and control of pine sawflies, some of which are serious pests, and will aid PPQ’s mission to secure and protect U.S. agricultural resources.
The tool includes:
- Two matrix-based keys, one for adult females and the other adult males
- Illustrated fact sheets
- A filterable image gallery
- A filterable plant association table with information for each taxon
Diprion ID joins ITP's collection of over 50 identification tool websites.
