Diagnosis

Body length 3.6-5.7 mm. Body width 1.8-2.7 mm. Head basic color green. Antennae filiformfiliform:
slender antennae with antennomeres of similar shape
, bi- or tricolored, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
1 pale olivine, antennomeres 2-3 olive ocher, antennomeres 4-11 cinnamon brown. Maxillary palpi yellow or yellow ocher, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black or chestnut. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
paris green or green, subquadrate, deeply bifoveate, shagreened with minute tubercles. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
black or amber brown. Elytra green, vittatevittate:
(here) marked by longitudinally extended maculae different from the basic color of elytron
, with one sutural and one humeral chestnut vittae and sulphur yellow diffuse area adjacent to suture and laterallateral:
located near the sides of the body
margin of elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
. Elytral epipleura completely green. Elytra surface with four distinct sinuatesinuate:
curved in some way
sulci, strongest behind the humeral callushumeral callus:
(pl. calli) more or less marked tubercle or knob on the anterobasal angle of elytron
and extending beyond the middle. Sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytra round, punctation dense, coarse. Abdomen pale olivine or green. Tarsi and tibiae black or chestnut, femora uniform pale olivine. Aedeagusaedeagus:
the main sclerotized part of the male genitalia; "aedeagus" is used here instead of "median lobe of aedeagus"
symmetric, with three internal sac scleritessclerites:
(here) the sclerotized hooks, spines or plates in the internal sac
.

Known distribution

Mexico, Panama.

Host plants

Cucurbita moschata (Duchn. ex Lam.) Duchn. ex Poir, Cucumis melo L. (Krysan & Smith, 1987).

Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica virescens hausteca Krysan & Smith can be separated from another subspecies by the following features: maxillary palpi and labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
yellow in D. virescens virescens, but labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black or chestnut in D. virescens hausteca; head tinged testaceous in D. virescens virescens, but head is green with only central area tinged cinnamon-brown in D. virescens hausteca. D. virescens hausteca is similar to D. virgifera. They can be separated by the following features: the yellow coloration adjacent to the sutural vitta is clearly contiguous with that vitta in D. virescens hausteca, but clearly separated from the chestnut sutural vitta in D. virgifera; sclerite 4B absent in the internal sac in D. virescens hausteca.
