Diagnosis

Body length 7.4-7.8 mm. Body width 3.7-3.8 mm. Head basic color yellow. Antennae filiformfiliform:
slender antennae with antennomeres of similar shape
, bi- or tricolored, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
1 pale olivine, antennomeres 2-3 yellow, upper sides darkened, antennomeres 4-8 gradually infuscated, antennomeres 9-10 yellow, partly infuscated, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
11 dark apically. Maxillary palpi yellow, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
yellow ocher. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
green or deep malachite green, subquadrate, bifoveate, with small round foveae, shagreened with minute wrinkles. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
yellow or yellow ocher. Elytra deep malachite green, maculatemaculate:
(here) marked by maculae or patches of a different shape and size, usually clearly separated from each other
, with two small round yellow humeral spots and two transverse yellow maculae behind the middle of elytra. Elytral epipleura completely green, sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytra obtuse-angled, punctation dense, fine. Abdomen pale olivine. Tarsi and tibiae yellow or mars yellow, femora deep malachite green. Aedeagusaedeagus:
the main sclerotized part of the male genitalia; "aedeagus" is used here instead of "median lobe of aedeagus"
symmetric, with four internal sac scleritessclerites:
(here) the sclerotized hooks, spines or plates in the internal sac
.

Remarks

Two males from Cerro Zunil in the BMNH represent Jacoby's variety of D. selecta. After study of genitalia in one male we found that internal sac armament is quite different from that in D. selecta. Body shape and maculae arrangement on the elytra in D. s2n also differs from D. selecta. Therefore, we treat it as a separate new species.

Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica barclayi Derunkov, Prado, Tishechkin, Konstantinov is very similar to D. selecta Jacoby. They can be separated by the following features: there are only two maculae on elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
in D. barclayi, but three maculae in D. selecta. Shape and arrangement of maculae is quite different in both species. Armament of internal sac is also different (sclerite 4C is simple pointed hook in D. selecta, while it is elongate flat and saw-like plate, toothed laterally in D. barclayi).
