Cultivar or taxon

Citrus x aurantium L., pro sp. [Sweet Orange Group] (sensu Mabberley 1997, Bayer et al. 2009); Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (sensu Swingle and Reece 1967; sensu Tanaka sec. Cottin 2002)

Origin

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone F-55-23): "The Valencia “55 series” are DPI nucellar lines. These selections are young nucellar lines from seedlings of fruit collected from the Hughes grove in Orange County....Fruit production has been slightly better than the Hughes selections and significantly better than the old lines. Similar to F-55-4, F-55-1, and S-F-55-28. Originally assigned SPB-5A, planted in I-4 Foundation Grove in 1961."

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone SPB-1-14-19): "This Valencia is a Hughes nucellar line, entered budwood program in 1955. These SPB-1 trees are the first selections from open pollinated Valencia seedlings in a grove planted by Dr. and Mrs. Ausker Hughes near Plymouth in Orange County in 1941....Similar to SPB-1-14-31, and SPB-1-12-7."

Description

Crown compact or dense, not weeping. First-year twig surface glabrous; second- or third-year twig surface; thorns absent or not persistent; prickles absent or not persistent. Petiole glabrous, length short; wings narrow, adjoining the blade. Leaflets one, margin bluntly toothed, shade leaflet blades flat or weakly conduplicate, sun leaflet blades weakly or strongly conduplicate. Scent of crushed leaflets sweetly orange-like. The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following additional notes on the cultivar (clone F-55-23): "Fruit characteristics are typical of Valencia oranges. Trees are a little more vigorous than old line and Hughes nucellar selections."

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following additional notes on the cultivar (clone SPB-1-14-19): "The nucellar characteristics made them more cold hardy than the old line selections. Fruit production is better than the old-line selections."

Notes

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone SPB-1-14-19): "They have become the most popular Valencia selections in Florida."
