Origin

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone DPI-70-9): "Entered into budwood program in 1976. Summerfield originated in an old planting called Wild Grove near Wiersdale in Marion County. The original tree was discovered in 1928 by W. J. Lyles, the owner of Summerfield Nursery Co. The Summerfield navel has been in production since 1931 as one of the earliest maturing navels in Florida. The parent trees entered into the Citrus Budwood Registration Program were located on land that was leased from R.W. Oxner for a nursery by Summerfield nursery. The trees were lined out in 1938 and left as a grove planting. The parent trees were infected with psorosis virus and exocortis viroid which were removed by the bureau by shoot-tip grafting."

Description

Crown compact or dense, not weeping. First-year twig surface glabrous; second- or third-year twig surface striate; thorns absent or not persistent; prickles absent or not persistent. Petiole glabrous, length medium; wings narrow, adjoining the blade. Leaflets one, margin bluntly toothed, shade leaflet blades flat, weakly conduplicate, sun leaflet blades flat, weakly or strongly conduplicate. Scent of crushed leaflets sweetly orange-like. Fruit as broad as long or longer than broad; rind yellow (7-10), yellow-orange (11), orange (12), or red-orange (13); rind texture smooth (1-3), slightly rough (4-5), or medium rough (6-7); firmness leathery; navel present; flesh orange; taste acidic-sweet.
