Origin

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone 61-1): "Brown Select Satsuma originated at the Louisiana Citrus Research Station from a group of open-pollinated Kimbrough seedlings....Original seed from LSU, DPI-50-29. Planted at participant #61 and reestablished in program."

Description

Crown compact or dense, not weeping. First-year twig surface glabrous; second- or third-year twig striate; thorns absent or not persistent; prickles absent or not persistent. Petiole glabrous, length medium, wings narrow, adjoining the blade. Leaflets one, margin bluntly toothed, shade leaflet blades weakly conduplicate, sun leaflet blades weakly conduplicate. Scent of crushed leaflets mandarin-like. Fruit as broad as long or longer than broad; rind green-yellow (6), yellow (7-10), yellow-orange (11), or orange (12); rind texture slightly rough (4-5), medium rough (6-7), or rough (8); firmness leathery; navel absent; flesh orange; taste acidic-sweet.

Notes

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone 61-1): "Reported to be more cold hardy than Owari and ripens 1 or 2 weeks earlier than Owari."
