Carphoborus

Type species

Carphoborus minimus Fabricius

Adapted from Wood 1982, p. 371-386

Diagnosis

This species can be distinguished from the similar Polygraphus Erichson by having the anterior margin of the compound eye emarginateemarginate:
notched or indented
instead of completely divided and by the elevated alternatealternate:
occurring at a determined succession at a specific place
declivital interstriaeinterstriae:
longitudinally arranged lines, often flat or raised, often having setae, and located between the striae on the elytron
at the basalbasal:
situated at the base or inner edge and proximal to the main body
margin.

Description

Species in this genus range from 1.4 to 2.6 mm in length and are approximately 2.2 to 2.6 times as long as wide. Their color ranges from dark brown to black. The pronotumpronotum:
the upper or dorsal surface of the first thoracic segment
is wider than long. The scutellumscutellum:
a shield-like bony plate or scale, as on the thorax of some insects
is small and depresseddepressed:
a structure that is flattened or impressed
. The declivitydeclivity:
the apical portion of the beetle elytra that slopes downward
is convex with distinctively raised alternatealternate:
occurring at a determined succession at a specific place
interstriae, most noticeable in interstriaeinterstriae:
longitudinally arranged lines, often flat or raised, often having setae, and located between the striae on the elytron
three which also has rows of pointed tuberclestubercles:
stiff, pointed, tapered processes on the surface of the integument, usually shorter than a spine
. The vestiturevestiture:
a surface covering of scales or setae on the body, wing, or other appendage
consists of short and thick scale- and hair-like setaehair-like setae:
setae that are thin and similar to a hair
. The fronsfrons:
the upper anterior portion of the head capsule
is dimorphicdimorphic:
a structure that occurs in two different forms, such as color, shape, or size
; the female’s is ornamentedornamented:
having markings or structures on the esclerotized regions of the integument, such as setae, tubercles, or granules
by abundant setaesetae:
a hollow, often slender and hair-like cuticular projection
, the male's with a transverse, usually bituberculatebituberculate:
having two tubercles or pointed sclerotized structures
elevation near upper level of eyes and less hair-like setaehair-like setae:
setae that are thin and similar to a hair
. The anterior margin of the compound eye is emarginateemarginate:
notched or indented
. The scapescape:
the first and basal segment of the insect's antennae
is usually longer than the 5-segmented funiclefunicle:
the antennal segments located between the scape and the club in some Coleoptera
. The clubclub:
the apical segment of the insect antennae that is enlarged or thickened such that it is anatomically differentiated from the preceding segments
is spatulatespatulate:
shaped like a spatual, typically broad at the apex and tapered at the base
(somewhat rhomboidrhomboid:
in the shape of a rhombus
) with at least two distinct straight or transverse suturessutures:
a seam or seam-like line of contact between two sclerites or hardened body parts immovably connected
, sometimes a third is visible. The procoxaeprocoxae:
extra segment occasionally preceding coxa (hip joint) of the first or anterior pair of legs of arthropods
are contiguouscontiguous:
sharing an edge or boundary; touching
.
