Bactrocera lineata can be identified reliably based on morphology. Spot characters are the black postpronotal lobes, almost completely black abdomen, and dark front and mid femurs.

Bactrocera lineata has been recorded from New Guinea and the Torres Straight Islands, which is its presumed native range.
