Morphology-based identification
Bactrocera expandens can be identified reliably based on morphology. Spot characters are a wide costal band up to vein R4+5 and light infuscation across the entire wing.

Distribution
Bactrocera expandens has been recorded from the Maluku islands in Indonesia, New Guinea, and Queensland in Australia. Its native range is unclear.
