Westin

Synonyms

Clementina (sec. Cottin 2002)

Cultivar or taxon

Citrus x aurantium L., pro sp. [Sweet Orange Group] (sensu Mabberley 1997, Bayer et al. 2009); Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (sensu Swingle and Reece 1967; sensu Tanaka sec. Cottin 2002)

Origin

Hodgson (1967) noted that: "Formerly known as Clementina, to avoid confusion with the well-known Clementine mandarin, it was recently renamed in honor of Professor Philippe Westin Cabral de Vasconcellos and is considered to be among the most promising midseason varieties for Brazil."

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone DPI-441-2): "Originated from seed introduced from Brazil where this cultivar is established commercially....The budwood program’s parent trees originated in research block of Dr. Bill Castle on the property of Orie Lee in St. Cloud. Released to industry in 1999."

Description

Crown compact or dense, not weeping. First-year twig surface glabrous; second- or third-year twig surface striate; thorns absent or not persistent; prickles absent or not persistent. Petiole glabrous, length medium; wings narrow, medium, or wide, adjoining the blade. Leaflets one, margin crenate/crenulate or bluntly toothed, shade leaflet blades flat or weakly conduplicate, sun leaflet blades weakly conduplicate. Scent of crushed leaflets sweetly orange-like. Fruit as broad as long or longer than broad; rind yellow (7-10), yellow-orange (11), or orange (12); rind texture slightly rough (4-5); firmness leathery; navel absent; flesh orange; taste acidic-sweet.

Hodgson (1967) provided the following additional notes on the cultivar: "The fruit of this Brazilian midseason variety is medium-small, virtually seedless, especially well-colored (deep orange), juicy, and richly flavored (relatively high acidity). The shipping quality is reported to be good. The tree is vigorous, spreading, large, and very productive."

The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following additional notes on the cultivar (clone DPI-441-2): "The fruit are small to medium size, low-seeded, and have well-colored juice. This selection of Westin seems to mature early."
