About this tool

Using this tool

Exotic Hornet ID can be used to identify common species of vespine wasps (genus Vespa). This tool is primarily aimed at more experienced entomologists who are seeking to confirm which species of Vespa their specimen belongs to. Please consult the "What is a hornet?" page to confirm your specimen belongs to the genus Vespa before using the key. If the terms on that page are unfamiliar to you, or you suspect your specimen might be another type of wasp or insect, we recommend you start with the North American Hornet Screening Tool instead.

Identification key: The interactive matrix key allows users to select states for characters they feel confident in assigning while omitting those they are less sure about. As users work through the key, entities (species) that do not fit character descriptions are removed from the possible identification list to allow users to assign specimens to a taxon at a level with which they feel comfortable/confident. Please note: the key only includes Vespa species. The fact sheets include several similar native wasps for reference. Please consult the "What is a hornet?" page to confirm your specimen belongs to the genus Vespa before using this key.

Fact sheets: Species fact sheets provide detailed information on the distribution, biology and life cycle, diagnostic characteristics, and similar species to each taxon.

Gallery: An interactive image gallery can be used to quickly compare different species.

Glossary: Terms and concepts related to hornet morphology and biology help users navigate specialized terminology used in this website.
