A new tool for identification of longhorned beetles in the family Cerambycidae
ITP is pleased to announce the release of CerambycID, a new tool that supports identification of conifer-feeding and regularly intercepted invasive longhorned beetle genera, along with the species of Monochamus that feed on conifers.
Longhorned beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) are represented by more than 36,000 species worldwide and feed on diverse plant types from trees to grasses. This diversity can make it difficult to identify pest species that often have a questionable origin.
Three user-friendly matrix-based Lucid keys are provided: one to conifer-feeding genera the occur in the Northern Hemisphere, a second to the genera that are most commonly intercepted in the U.S.A. (includes both hardwood and softwood-feeders), and a third focused on worldwide conifer-feeding Monochamus species. These resources provide an informed starting point for identifying intercepted samples.
In addition to the keys, CerambycID includes
- A filterable, “visual key” style image gallery
- Illustrated fact sheets with extensive diagnoses
- Information on anatomy
- A list of helpful and related online resources
