In the Asteraceae, the enlarged apex of the flowering axis upon which the florets are borne is called a receptacle. The receptacle surface also sometimes bears bristles or scales. It may be necessary to longitudinally section the head or extract some florets, to determine the nature of the receptacle surface. Also, do not confuse bristles or scales on the receptacle surface with pappus bristles or scales subtending the floret corollas (not shown in illustrations below; see the feature Pappus).
