| superior A superior ovary is situated above the point of attachment of the perianth and stamens, or above the insertion of a free hypanthium. |

| inferior An inferior ovary lies beneath the point of attachment of the perianth and stamens. Such an ovary can also be considered one that is fused to a hypanthium. |
