Mediterranean region.

Brief characterization

Basal leaves deeply palmately lobed, with lobes toothed or further dissected; stem leaves sessile; cup-shaped flowers solitary or several on branched stems; 5 sepals and 5 petals (on single flowers only); stamens many, arranged spirally; many free carpels in a central globular or elongate mass.

Cultivar and/or species variation

The double form of flowers predominates, characterized by rounded flowers with many overlapping petals; flowers 3-5(10) cm across, commonly yellow to orange, and in numerous other colors.
