Origin

West and central Asia.

Brief characterization

Leafless scapes bearing long, cylindrical, tapering, spike-like racemes; star-shaped flowers 2-5 cm across on long pedicels, each subtended by one small, long-tailed, scarious bract; 6 membranous tepals sometimes fused at base, 1- or 3-5-nerved; stamens conspicuous, often longer than tepals.

Cultivar and/or species variation

Racemes ca. 15 cm to 1.2 m long; flowers white, orange, yellow, or pink, with midribs in contrasting colors, e.g. brown or red; tepals 9-21 mm long; stamens frequently yellow to orange-red.
