Pseudohylesinus

Type species

Pseudohylesinus grandis Swaine

Adapted from Wood 1982, p. 129-130

Diagnosis

Pseudohylesinus is similar to Xylechinus Chapuis and Hylorgupinus Swaine, but it can be easily distinguished by the two-color pattern of dark and light scale-like setaescale-like setae:
setae that are wider than hair
covering the body.

Description

Species in this genus range in length from 2.2 to 5.8 mm and are approximately 2.1 to 2.5 times as long as wide. Their color consists of patterns of light and dark areas due to the bicolored vestiturevestiture:
a surface covering of scales or setae on the body, wing, or other appendage
, which are similar to Hylesinus Fabricius. The pronotumpronotum:
the upper or dorsal surface of the first thoracic segment
is usually wider than long. The scutellumscutellum:
a shield-like bony plate or scale, as on the thorax of some insects
is small and depresseddepressed:
a structure that is flattened or impressed
. The declivitydeclivity:
the apical portion of the beetle elytra that slopes downward
is convex with a vestiturevestiture:
a surface covering of scales or setae on the body, wing, or other appendage
consisting of abundant scale-like setaescale-like setae:
setae that are wider than hair
and rows of longer and erect interstrial hair-like setaehair-like setae:
setae that are thin and similar to a hair
that are also present on the elytraelytra:
the two external and hardened or sclerotized forewings of adult Coleoptera, often appearing leather-like in texture
. The fronsfrons:
the upper anterior portion of the head capsule
has a median carinacarina:
a ridge or elevation of the cuticle
above the epistomaepistoma:
the sclerotized region between the lower frontal area and the mouth parts
. The scapescape:
the first and basal segment of the insect's antennae
is shorter than the 7-segmented funiclefunicle:
the antennal segments located between the scape and the club in some Coleoptera
. The ovateovate:
egg shaped, with the narrow end apically
clubclub:
the apical segment of the insect antennae that is enlarged or thickened such that it is anatomically differentiated from the preceding segments
can be broad to slightly flat, and it has three straight suturessutures:
a seam or seam-like line of contact between two sclerites or hardened body parts immovably connected
. The anterior margin of the compound eye is entire. The procoxaeprocoxae:
extra segment occasionally preceding coxa (hip joint) of the first or anterior pair of legs of arthropods
are separated.
