Coptoborus

Type species

Coptoborus emarginatus Hopkins

Adapted from Wood 1982, p. 800-804 (catulus, pseudotenuis, cuneatus, exutus and tolimanus)

Diagnosis

Coptoborus differs from the similar Xyleborus Eichhoff in that the elytraelytra:
the two external and hardened or sclerotized forewings of adult Coleoptera, often appearing leather-like in texture
gradually tapers on the apicalapical:
situated at the apex or extreme outer edge of a structure or appendage
third, the suturalsutural:
pertaining to a suture such as the elytral suture or midline between the two wings
notch can be emarginateemarginate:
notched or indented
, and they are proportionally more elongate.

Description

Species in this genus range from 1.6 to 2.7 mm in length and are approximately 2.9 to 3.4 times as long as wide. Their color ranges from yellowish brown to reddish brown. The pronotumpronotum:
the upper or dorsal surface of the first thoracic segment
is longer than wide and asperateasperate:
of a surface or texture which is rough
in the anterior half. The scutellumscutellum:
a shield-like bony plate or scale, as on the thorax of some insects
is large and flush with the surface of the elytraelytra:
the two external and hardened or sclerotized forewings of adult Coleoptera, often appearing leather-like in texture
. The declivitydeclivity:
the apical portion of the beetle elytra that slopes downward
is gradually convex bearing granulesgranules:
a small grain-like elevation
and denticles on interstriaeinterstriae:
longitudinally arranged lines, often flat or raised, often having setae, and located between the striae on the elytron
1 and 3 or only granulesgranules:
a small grain-like elevation
, and it tapers towards the apex. The vestiturevestiture:
a surface covering of scales or setae on the body, wing, or other appendage
is restricted to the sides where it consists of hair-like setaehair-like setae:
setae that are thin and similar to a hair
and on the declivitydeclivity:
the apical portion of the beetle elytra that slopes downward
where it consists of erect bristles. The anterior margin of the compound eye is emarginateemarginate:
notched or indented
. The scapescape:
the first and basal segment of the insect's antennae
is slightly longer than the 5-segmented funiclefunicle:
the antennal segments located between the scape and the club in some Coleoptera
as observed in the only occurring species. The clubclub:
the apical segment of the insect antennae that is enlarged or thickened such that it is anatomically differentiated from the preceding segments
is obliquely truncateobliquely truncate:
pertaining to a structure abruptly and concavely cut
, with only one recurvedrecurved:
bent backward or downward as a smiley face
suture on its posterior faceposterior face:
the side not visible when the club is elevated against the head or visible when the club is down and sensing a surface; it usually has no sutures
. They have a depresseddepressed:
a structure that is flattened or impressed
pregular region. The anterior coxaecoxae:
the basal or proximal segment of the insect leg to its body
are contiguouscontiguous:
sharing an edge or boundary; touching
.
