Cnesinus

Type species

Cnesinus strigicollis LeConte

Adapted from Wood 1982, p. 208-245

Diagnosis

Species in Cnesinus can be distinguished from Pagiocerus Eichhoff by the straight suturessutures:
a seam or seam-like line of contact between two sclerites or hardened body parts immovably connected
on the clubclub:
the apical segment of the insect antennae that is enlarged or thickened such that it is anatomically differentiated from the preceding segments
.

Description

Species on this genus range from 1.6 to 3.5 mm and are from 2.4 to 2.8 times as long as wide. Their color ranges from reddish brown to black. The large pronotumpronotum:
the upper or dorsal surface of the first thoracic segment
varies from smooth to longitudinally strigosestrigose:
marked with fine, close-set grooves, ridges, or streaks
. The scutellumscutellum:
a shield-like bony plate or scale, as on the thorax of some insects
is small. The anterior margin of the elytraelytra:
the two external and hardened or sclerotized forewings of adult Coleoptera, often appearing leather-like in texture
presents small crenulationscrenulations:
structures on the surface of the integument an having irregular, wavy, or serrate outline
. The declivitydeclivity:
the apical portion of the beetle elytra that slopes downward
is convex, sometimes shallowly impressed at interstriaeinterstriae:
longitudinally arranged lines, often flat or raised, often having setae, and located between the striae on the elytron
3 in such a way that it can appear flat or slightly bisulcatebisulcate:
a structure that is grooved in two places, often contiguous at both sides of a central line
, and it is usually unarmedunarmed:
having no granules, teeth, tubercles, spines, or other protective structures
. The fronsfrons:
the upper anterior portion of the head capsule
is sexually dimorphicdimorphic:
a structure that occurs in two different forms, such as color, shape, or size
, concave and surrounded by upward facing setaesetae:
a hollow, often slender and hair-like cuticular projection
more elaborate in males, slightly depresseddepressed:
a structure that is flattened or impressed
to convex in females. The vestiturevestiture:
a surface covering of scales or setae on the body, wing, or other appendage
varies from absent to abundant, usually of hair-like setaehair-like setae:
setae that are thin and similar to a hair
, rarely with scales. The anterior margin of the compound eye is sinuatesinuate:
descriptive of a narrow and winding thin structure or margin of a feature
to emarginateemarginate:
notched or indented
, in a few species subcontiguoussubcontiguous:
pertaining to adjacent structures, margins, or surfaces that are in contact but are not united or fused
at the top. The scapescape:
the first and basal segment of the insect's antennae
is usually longer than the 6-segmented funiclefunicle:
the antennal segments located between the scape and the club in some Coleoptera
which has long setaesetae:
a hollow, often slender and hair-like cuticular projection
. The oval clubclub:
the apical segment of the insect antennae that is enlarged or thickened such that it is anatomically differentiated from the preceding segments
has three straight suturessutures:
a seam or seam-like line of contact between two sclerites or hardened body parts immovably connected
, though the third is absent in some species. The procoxaeprocoxae:
extra segment occasionally preceding coxa (hip joint) of the first or anterior pair of legs of arthropods
are separated.
