Taxonomy

Aethes Billberg (Tortricidae: Tortrincae: Cochylini)

Overview

Aethes is a large genus consisting of approximately 150 species (Gilligan et al. 2018Gilligan et al. 2018:
Gilligan, T. M., Baixeras, J., Brown, J. W. 2018. T@RTS: Online World Catalogue of the Tortricidae (Ver. 4.0). http://www.tortricid.net/catalogue.asp [accessed 8 October 2020].

). Most described species occur in the Holarctic region, but a few are known from the Neotropical and Indomalayan regions. No described species occur in Australia or sub-Saharan Africa. Adults are highly variable in forewing markings and size, but can be identified by the presence of paired, sickle-like structures on the male sociisocii:
a pair of lightly sclerotized setose lobes
in almost all species (Sabourin et al. 2002Sabourin et al. 2002:
Sabourin, M., Miller, W. E., Metzler, E. H., Vargo, J. T. 2002. Revised identities and new species of Aethes from midwestern North America. Journal of the Lepidopterists#39; Society. 56. 216-233.

).

Larvae of most Aethes seem to prefer plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae, although exceptions exist.

No species of Aethes are known to be significant economic pests, but we treat the genus on this site because its high diversity may lend species to be confused with target species.
