Description

Fruit: A legumelegume:
usually dry, dehiscent fruit derived from a single carpel that opens along two longitudinal sutures
; unilocular; 1.4–11 cm long; 0.4–0.7 cm wide; 2–9 times longer than wide; with deciduous androecial sheath; with deciduous corolla; with deciduous calyx, or persistent calyx; with calyx shorter than fruit; without orifice formed by curving of fruit or fruit segments; straight; not plicate; not twisted; symmetrical; linear; not inflated; terete, or compressed (slightly); with beak; straight; with solid beak the same color and texture as fruit; tapered at apex; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; tapered at base; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; with the apex and base uniform in texture; margin not constricted, or constricted; margin slightly constricted along both margins; margin without sulcus; margin embellished; margin with thickened sutural areas (slightly); wing(s) absent; nonstipitate; with all layers dehiscing; splitting along suture(s). Dehiscence of valves along both sutures; active; with valves twisting. Replum invisible. Epicarp monochrome; reddish brown to brown, or black, or gray; pubescent and indurate; with hairs appressed; with 1 type of pubescence; sparsely strigose; with pubescence white. Endocarp present (papery (Du Puy et al. 2002)); visible; opaque; without adhering pieces of testa; septate; with septa thin (tissue paper-like), flexible; with septa eglandular; chartaceous; not exfoliating; without wings; entire. Seed(s) (1–)3–13; length parallel with fruit length; neither overlapping nor touching; in 1 series. Funiculus 0.7–1.5 mm long; of 1 length only; triangular. Aril absent.

Seed: 1.5–5 mm long; 1.7–3 mm wide; 5 mm thick; not overgrown; not angular; symmetrical; elliptic to oblong to circular (sub). Testa present; without pieces of adhering epicarp; free from endocarp; not modified by a bloom; colored; monochrome, or mottled; light to red brown to green (olive), or gray; with black overlay; glabrous. Pleurogram absent. Pseudopleurogram absent. Fracture lines absent. Rim absent. Wing(s) absent. Raphe not visible. Hilum present; larger than punctiform; not within corona, halo, or rim.

Distribution

Endemic to Madagascar.
