Description

Fruit: A legume; unilocular; 13–40 cm long; 1.5–2.5 cm wide; 0.8–1 cm thick; more than 9 times longer than wide; with deciduous androecial sheath; with deciduous corolla; with deciduous calyx; without orifice formed by curving of fruit or fruit segments; curved; not plicate; not twisted; asymmetrical; linear; not inflated; compressed; with beak, or without beak; straight; long tapered at apex; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; tapered at base; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; with the apex and base uniform in texture; coriaceous, or ligneous; seed chambers externally visible; seed chambers with the raised seed chambers not torulose; margin not constricted (except when ovules abort); margin without sulcus; margin plain; wing(s) absent; nonstipitate; with all layers dehiscing; splitting along suture(s). Dehiscence of valves along both sutures; active, or passive; with valves enrolling. Replum invisible. Epicarp glossy; multicolored; mottled (due to gray hairs); brown; with surface texture uniform; glabrate (in dense patches); with hairs erect; with simple hairs; eglandular; without spines; not smooth; with elevated features; veined; longitudinally veined relative to fruit length; not tuberculate; not exfoliating; without cracks; without embedded tissue, much thicker than epicarp, running from base to apex. Mesocarp present; surface not veined; 1-layered; without balsamic vesicles; with fibers; without reniform canals; mealy; ligneous. Endocarp present; visible; dull; opaque; mottled; tan; with mottling over seed chambers; with brown overlay; without adhering pieces of testa; subseptate; not exfoliating; remaining fused to mesocarp and epicarp; entire. Seed(s) 6–16; length parallel with fruit length; touching; in 1 series. Funiculus 0.1–6 mm long; of 1 length only; filiform; hooked. Aril absent.

Seed: 15–20 mm long; 12–17 mm wide; 9–12 mm thick; not overgrown; angular, or not angular; symmetrical; oblong to rectangular; compressed; with surface smooth; without visible radicle and cotyledon lobes; without hilar sinus; without umbo on seed faces; without medial ridge on each face. Cuticle not exfoliating; not inflated; not wrinkled. Testa present; without pieces of adhering epicarp; not adhering to endocarp; free from endocarp; dull; not modified by a bloom; colored; mottled; black and yellow (ocher); with brown overlay; glabrous; not smooth; with elevated features, or recessed features; reticulate; osseous. Pleurogram absent. Pseudopleurogram absent. Fracture lines absent. Rim absent. Wing(s) absent. Raphe not visible. Hilum present; visible, or fully concealed; concealed by funicular remnant (surrounded by reddish brown collar); without faboid split; punctiform; marginal according to radicle tip; flush (pointed downward and often subtended by a funicular groove); not within corona, halo, or rim. Lens discernible; 1 mm long; with margins straight; square; not in groove of raphe; flush to recessed (slightly); dissimilar color from testa; brown (and fibrous); not within corona, halo, or rim. Endosperm present; thin; not pluglike and not resembling tip of radicle; adnate to testa. Cotyledons smooth; both outer faces convex; both the same thickness; both more or less of equal length; not folded; margin entire 180 degrees from base of radicle; similar at apex; partially concealing radicle; with lobes; with lobes not touching; with the interface division terminating at base of radicle; without margins recessed; inner face concave; glabrous on inner face. Embryonic axis straight; parallel to length of seed; without a joint evident between the radicle and the cotyledons. Radicle differentiated from cotyledon; centered between cotyledons. Plumule rudimentary; glabrous.

Distribution

Southwestern Madagascar.

Old World; southwestern Madagascar.
