Description

Fruit: A legume; unilocular; 12–22 cm long (Barneby and Grimes, 1996); 2.5–4.3 cm wide (Barneby and Grimes, 1996); 0.1–0.3 cm thick; 2–9 times longer than wide; with deciduous androecial sheath; with deciduous corolla; with deciduous calyx; without orifice formed by curving of fruit or fruit segments; straight; not plicate; not twisted; symmetrical; oblong; not inflated; compressed; with beak (5–8 X 0.8–1.4 mm); straight; with solid beak the same color and texture as fruit; rounded at apex, or tapered at apex; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; tapered at base; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; with the apex and base uniform in texture; chartaceous; seed chambers externally visible; seed chambers with the raised seed chambers not torulose; margin constricted; margin slightly constricted along both margins; margin without sulcus; margin embellished; margin with thickened sutural areas; wing(s) absent; stipitate; with the stipe 4–15 mm long; with all layers dehiscing; splitting along suture(s). Dehiscence of valves along both sutures; apical and down; passive. Replum invisible. Embryonic axis straight; parallel to length of seed; without a joint evident between the radicle and the cotyledons. Radicle differentiated from cotyledon; bulbose; lobe tip straight; straight with embryonic axis; centered between cotyledons; 1/2 to nearly length of cotyledons. Plumule well developed; glabrous.

Barneby and Grimes (1996) recognized this monotypic genus. Prior to Barneby and Grimes, its single species had, at various times, been placed in: Albizia (2.5.03), Enterolobium (2.5.07), and Pithecellobium (2.5.11).
