Description

Fruit: A legume; unilocular; 8–13 cm long; 2–3 cm wide; 0.2–0.3 cm thick; 2–9 times longer than wide; with deciduous androecial sheath; with deciduous corolla; with deciduous calyx; without orifice formed by curving of fruit or fruit segments; straight to curved; not plicate; not twisted; symmetrical; oblong; not inflated; flattened; without beak; rounded at apex; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; rounded at base; aligned with longitudinal axis of fruit; with the apex and base uniform in texture; coriaceous; seed chambers externally visible, or invisible; margin constricted; margin slightly constricted along both margins; margin without sulcus; margin plain, or embellished; margin with prickles; wing(s) absent; stipitate; with the stipe 5–7 mm long; indehiscent. Replum visible. Epicarp dull; monochrome; greenish to reddish tan; with surface texture uniform; glabrous; eglandular; without spines; not smooth; with elevated features; veined; reticulately veined; not tuberculate; exfoliating; without cracks; without embedded tissue, much thicker than epicarp, running from base to apex. Mesocarp absent. Endocarp present; visible; dull (separating into segments and from exocarp and sutures); opaque; monochrome; brown (darker in seed chamber); smooth; without adhering pieces of testa; septate; not exfoliating; separating from epicarp; separating into 1-seeded winged segments (falling free from replum). Seed(s) 12–14; length oblique to fruit length; neither overlapping nor touching; in 1 series. Funiculus to 10 mm long; of 1 length only; filiform; plicate. Aril absent.

Seed: 7 mm long; 5.5 mm wide; 1.5 mm thick; not overgrown; not angular; symmetrical; oblong; compressed; with surface smooth; without visible radicle and cotyledon lobes; without hilar sinus; without umbo on seed faces; without medial ridge on each face. Cuticle not exfoliating; not inflated; not wrinkled. Testa present; without pieces of adhering epicarp; not adhering to endocarp; free from endocarp; glossy; not modified by a bloom; colored; monochrome; brown; glabrous; smooth; coriaceous. Pleurogram present; 90 %. Pseudopleurogram absent. Fracture lines absent. Rim absent. Wing(s) absent. Raphe not visible. Hilum present; fully concealed; concealed by funicular remnant; without faboid split; punctiform; subapical to radicle tip; flush; not within corona, halo, or rim. Lens not discernible. Endosperm present; thin; not pluglike and not resembling tip of radicle; adnate to testa. Cotyledons smooth; both outer faces flat; both the same thickness; both more or less of equal length; not folded; margin entire 180 degrees from base of radicle; similar at apex; partially concealing radicle; with lobes; with lobes touching (auriculate); with the interface division terminating at base of radicle; with margin(s) recessed; inner face flat; glabrous on inner face. Embryonic axis straight; parallel to length of seed; without a joint evident between the radicle and the cotyledons. Radicle differentiated from cotyledon; straight with embryonic axis; centered between cotyledons; less than 1/2 length of cotyledons. Plumule rudimentary; glabrous.

Distribution

Southern Mexico, Central America, Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon, the Guianas, and tropical and southern Africa.

New World and Old World; southern Mexico, Central America, and South America (Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon, the Guianas); tropical and soythern Africa.

Generic Notes

Brenan (1986) revised the genus, and his species count and distribution are used. He demonstrated that Adenopodia is the oldest name for the genus which was traditionally referred to as Pseudoentada N.L. Britton & J.N. Rose.
