Description

Typical of Anastrepha larvae with the following specific characteristics for the third instar:

Body. Length up to 10.8 mm long

Head. Number of oral ridges usually 8–13, margins serrate, or scalloped, or emarginate; number of accessory plates 7–8, margins serrate.

Spinules and creeping welts. Dorsal spinules on segments T1–A2 or T1–A3.

Anterior spiracles. Anterior spiracular tubules usually 16–21

Caudal segment (A8) and anal lobes. Anal lobes plainly visible, but not strongly protuberant; bifid.

* Only Inga spp. are likely to be encountered as hosts of A. distincta.

Biogeographic region and distribution

Neotropical, Nearctic

USA (South Texas).
Mexico.
Central America: all countries.
South America: all countries south to Peru and Brazil.


 

Status of knowledge

Unpublished morphological data on larvae of Anastrepha distincta were incorporated into the key of Steck et al. (1990). Some SEM images and parts of this description were first published in Carroll et al. (2004+).
 

Specimens examined

Based on Steck et al. (1990) and unpublished data: Chiapas, in pulp of Inga fruits (n=10) and Honduras (n=5).
