Diagnosis

Body length 4.9-6.1 mm. Body width 2.7-3.3 mm. Head basic color black. Antennae shape filiformfiliform:
slender antennae with antennomeres of similar shape
, bi- or tricolored, antennomeres 2-3 yellow, antennomeres 4-8 gradually infuscated, antennomeres 9-11 brussels brown. Maxillary palpi yellow or yellow ocher, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
yellow or yellow ocher, subquadrate, bifoveate, with small round foveae, not shagreened. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
piceous or black. Elytra yellow or rufous, maculatemaculate:
(here) marked by maculae or patches of a different shape and size, usually clearly separated from each other
with three sharp-edged chestnut maculae on each elytronelytron:

Diabrotica octoplagiata Jacoby is similar to D. variegata Jacoby. They can be separated by the following features: pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
is yellow in D. octoplagiata, but chestnut in D. variegata; sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytra round in D. octoplagiata, but dentiform in D. variegata.
