Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica ochreata (Fabricius) is very similar to D. olivieri Jacoby and D. graminea Baly. They can be separated by the following features: the head is yellow in D. ochreata, but black in D. olivieri and D. graminea, scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
is piceous or black D. ochreata, but yellow in D. olivieri; elytra are uniformly yellow ocher in D. ochreata, but with black macula on the apexapex:
(pl. apices) the far distal end of a structure; opposite of base
in D. olivieri.
