Diagnosis

Body length 5.4-6.1 mm. Body width 2.7-2.9 mm. Head basic color black. Male antennae serrateserrate:
in reference to antennae, saw-like, often with a sharp ridge on the outer margin
, uniformly yellow. Female antennae filiformfiliform:
slender antennae with antennomeres of similar shape
, uniformly yellow or bi- or tricolored, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
1 uniformly yellow, antennomeres 2-3 yellow, upper sides darkened, antennomeres 4-8 gradually infuscated, antennomeres 9-11 uniformly light cadmium. Maxillary palpi yellow, penultimate segment of maxillary palpi not incrassate, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black or chestnut. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
yellow or ochraceous orange, subquadrate, weakly bifoveate, with wide shallow foveae, shagreened with microsculptural narrow, long meshes. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
yellow. Elytra yellow or rufous, maculatemaculate:
(here) marked by maculae or patches of a different shape and size, usually clearly separated from each other
, with short lines or small spots, usually associated with humeral and sutural black vittae. Humeral vittae occupy nearly the full length of elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
, sutural vitta not extend beyond 1/3 of elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
length. Elytral epipleura completely yellow. Sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytra round, punctation dense, fine. Abdomen yellow. Legs yellow. Aedeagusaedeagus:
the main sclerotized part of the male genitalia; "aedeagus" is used here instead of "median lobe of aedeagus"
symmetric, with five internal sac scleritessclerites:
(here) the sclerotized hooks, spines or plates in the internal sac
.

Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica lopatini Derunkov, Prado, Tishechkin, Konstantinov is similar to D. palpalis Jacoby. They can be separated by the following features: penultimate joint of maxillary palpi is not incrassate in D. lopatini, but strongly incrassate in D. palpalis; elytra with three black spots on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
, one on basalbasal:
of or pertaining to the base, as in the first, or basal segment of an appendage; opposite of apical
part of elytra and two behind the middle in D. palpalis, but with only one small black spot behind the middle on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
in D. lopatini; humeral vittae occupy nearly the full length of elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
in D. lopatini, but only small humeral spots present in D. palpalis; scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
is yellow in D. lopatini, but black or amber brown in D. palpalis.
