Diagnosis

Body length 5.4-6.3 mm, width 2.8-3.3 mm. Head basic color black. Antennae filiformfiliform:
slender antennae with antennomeres of similar shape
, bi- or tricolored, antennomeres 1-3 yellow, antennomeres 4-8 gradually infuscated, antennomeres 9-10 yellow ocher, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
11 completely yellow ocher or dark apically. Maxillary palpi yellow, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black or chestnut. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
yellow or ochraceous-orange, subquadrate, weakly bifoveate with wide shallow foveae, not shagreened or with narrow, long microsculpture meshes only basally. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
yellow or yellow ocher. Elytra yellow or rufous, with 2-3 black or chestnut bandsbands:
(here) transverse maculae on the beetle elytra
. Bandsbands:
(here) transverse maculae on the beetle elytra
may be connected creating two ring-shaped yellow maculae on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
, or basalbasal:
of or pertaining to the base, as in the first, or basal segment of an appendage; opposite of apical
band is reduced to three branches (two humeral and one sutural), posteriorposterior:
the region of the body parts of the beetle furthest from the head
band may be reduced to a few spots. Epipleura yellow, sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
round, punctation scattered, fine. Abdomen yellow. Legs yellow. Male protibiaeprotibiae:
tibiae of fore legs
thickened. Aedeagusaedeagus:
the main sclerotized part of the male genitalia; "aedeagus" is used here instead of "median lobe of aedeagus"
symmetric, internal sac with five scleritessclerites:
(here) the sclerotized hooks, spines or plates in the internal sac
.

Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica duckworthorum Derunkov, Prado, Tishechkin, Konstantinov is very similar to D. trifurcata Jacoby. They can be separated by the following features: legs and scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
are yellow in D. duckworthorum, while scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
and tibiatibia:
(pl. tibiae) the forth part of the beetle leg articulated with femur on the one side and with tarsus on the other side
are brown or black in D. trifurcata; antennae are shorter and pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
is narrower in D. duckworthorum than in D. trifurcata. Diabrotica duckworthorum is also very similar to the most of the "oculate" species, e.g. D. gratiosa Baly, D. adelpha Harold, D. biannularis Harold, D. bioculata Bowditch and D. pulchella (Jacquelin-du-Val). They can be separated by the following features: the tibiae of D. gratiosa and D. bioculata are black or dark brown, while yellow in D. duckworthorum; the pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
of D. adelpha lacks foveae (bifoveate on D. duckworthorum), it also possesses more convex elytra and is larger than D. duckworthorum; D. pulchella is larger too; the scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
of D. biannularis is black, while yellow in D. duckworthorum.
