Diagnosis

Body length 6.2-7.6 mm. Body width 3.2-3.7 mm. Head basic color yellow. Antennae filiformfiliform:
slender antennae with antennomeres of similar shape
, bi- or tricolored, antennomeres 1-3 yellow, antennomeres 4-8 brussels brown, antennomeres 9-10 light cadmium, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
11 dark apically. Maxillary palpi black or brussels brown, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black or piceous. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
yellow or buff yellow, subquadrate, deeply bifoveate, not shagreened. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
yellow. Elytra yellow or rufous, maculatemaculate:
(here) marked by maculae or patches of a different shape and size, usually clearly separated from each other
with 2 small black spots on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
, the first before, the second behind the middle, associated with humeral and sutural black vittae. Elytral epipleura completely yellow. Sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytra round, punctation dense, fine. Abdomen yellow. Tarsi black or amber brown. Protibia bicolored, yellow, outer edge with piceous or testaceous line, or extensively darkened. Meso- and metatibia black or piceous. Femora yellow. Aedeagusaedeagus:
the main sclerotized part of the male genitalia; "aedeagus" is used here instead of "median lobe of aedeagus"
symmetric, with six internal sac scleritessclerites:
(here) the sclerotized hooks, spines or plates in the internal sac
.

Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica curvilineata Jacoby is very similar to D. c1n, D. novemmaculata Jac. and D. palpalis Jac. They can be separated by the following features: elytra in D. curvilineata are maculatemaculate:
(here) marked by maculae or patches of a different shape and size, usually clearly separated from each other
with two small black spots on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
, but maculatemaculate:
(here) marked by maculae or patches of a different shape and size, usually clearly separated from each other
with two short black lines in D. c1n; the head in D. palpalis and D. novemmaculata is black, but yellow in D. curvilineata; the tarsi and tibiae of D. palpalis and D. novemmaculata are yellow, but black or extensively darkened in D. curvilineata; D. novemmaculata is larger than D. curvilineata.
