Diagnosis

Body length 8.3-8.4 mm. Body width 4.4-4.5 mm. Head basic color black. Antennae serrateserrate:
in reference to antennae, saw-like, often with a sharp ridge on the outer margin
(sometimes only slightly so), bi- or tricolored, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
1 pale olivine, antennomeres 2-3 yellow, upper sides darkened, antennomeres 4-8 gradually infuscated, antennomeres 9-10 light cadmium, antennomereantennomere:
"segment" of antenna, more or less clearly separated
11 cinnamon brown. Maxillary palpi yellow, labrumlabrum:
the "upper lip" of beetles, a movable sclerite joined under clypeus
black. Pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
paris green or green, subquadrate, weakly bifoveate with wide shallow foveae, not shagreened. Scutellumscutellum:
small, usually triangular shield between the bases of elytra
black or amber brown. Elytra bicolored, with yellow disk and green margins, with three transverse black bandsbands:
(here) transverse maculae on the beetle elytra
, two basalbasal:
of or pertaining to the base, as in the first, or basal segment of an appendage; opposite of apical
bandsbands:
(here) transverse maculae on the beetle elytra
conjunct with each other forming round macula on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
. Elytral epipleura completely green. Elytra surface not sulcatesulcate:
bearing the carinae or ridges on the elytron
, sometimes with one or two short plicae in posthumeral area. Sutural anglesutural angle:
the posterior angle or apex of the elytron near the suture
of elytra obtuse-angled, punctation scattered, fine. Abdomen yellow. Tarsi yellow or yellow ocher. Male metatibia spurmetatibia spur:
a short process at the apex of metatibia
elongate. Tibiae bicolored, yellow, outer edge with piceous or testaceous line, or extensively darkened. Femora paris green. Aedeagusaedeagus:
the main sclerotized part of the male genitalia; "aedeagus" is used here instead of "median lobe of aedeagus"
symmetric, with four internal sac scleritessclerites:
(here) the sclerotized hooks, spines or plates in the internal sac
.

Potential problems with identification

Diabrotica costaricensis Derunkov, Prado, Tishechkin, Konstantinov is very similar to D. viridicollis Jacoby, and D. dmitryogloblini. They can be separated by the following features: male metatibia spurmetatibia spur:
a short process at the apex of metatibia
elongate in D. costaricensis, but short in all other species; head is black in D. costaricensis, green with brownish olive vertexvertex:
the upper part of the head capsule behind the eyes
in D. dmitryogloblini and yellow with chestnut vertexvertex:
the upper part of the head capsule behind the eyes
in D. viridicollis; pronotumpronotum:
the notum of the prothorax with highly sclerotized pronotal disc
is foveate in D. costaricensis, but nonfoveate in D. viridicollis; two basalbasal:
of or pertaining to the base, as in the first, or basal segment of an appendage; opposite of apical
bandsbands:
(here) transverse maculae on the beetle elytra
on elytra conjunct with each other for forming round macula on each elytronelytron:
(pl. elytra) the fore highly sclerotized wing of beetle
, while black bandsbands:
(here) transverse maculae on the beetle elytra
are reduced to a substantial degree in D. viridicollis and D. dmitryogloblini; body shape is more convex and wider in D. costaricensis than in all other species; D. costaricensis is larger than all other species.
