Type Species

Unguispa impar Uhmann.

Diagnosis

Unguispa can be distinguished by the following combination of characters:

  • lateral margin of pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
and elytra with long, stiff spines
  • antennomere 1 without spine
  • pronotum pronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
with anterior margin with bifurcate spine on each side
  • tarsal claws not fused, asymmetrical; tibiatibia:
variable in length; joins femur and tarsus
    greatly expanding apically

Description

Body very small; elongate; subparallel; subconvex; color black; total length 2.7 to 3.2 mm.

Head: large; convex; vertexvertex:
occupies the area behind and between the eyes
with medial sulcus; eyeeye:
elongate, slightly prominent, multifaceted; usually slightly kidney-shaped

Antenna: reaches to base of pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
; expanding apically; with 11-antennomeres; antennomere 1 incrassate, 2x length of 2, without spine; 2 to 6 cylindrical, 3 longest; 7 to 10 transverse, subequal in length; 11 rounded at apex; 1 to 6 punctate, each puncture with white seta; 7 to 11 setose.

Pronotum: transverse; lateral margin straight and divergent for basal ½, then angulate and convergent to anterior angle, with 3 spines- bifurcate spine before angulation and a single spine after angulation (2+1); anterior angle rounded; anterior margin curved forward, with bifurcate spine on each side; posterior angle acute; posterior margin weakly bisinuate; surface punctate, each puncture with white seta.

Scutellum: cordate; punctate.

Elytron: lateral margin straight with spines of various lengths; exterior apical angle and apical margin rounded, with spines of various lengths; humerus angulate, with spines; with 8 rows of large punctures plus scutellar row, each puncture with white seta; disc with large spines.
