Spilophora Boheman 1850: 107

Synonomys

None.

Type Species

Calyptocephala trigemina Guérin-Méneville.

Diagnosis

Spilophora can be distinguished by following combination of characters:

  • the lateral margins of the pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
and the elytra without long, stiff spines
  • the head without a frontal horn
  • the pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
having a seta in all four angles
  • the anterior margin of the prosternumprosternum:
    contains two anterior coxal cavities
projecting forward, partially covering the mouth
  • the elytra at base being much wider than the base of the pronotum
  • the elytra having no costae and being rounded at the sides
  • the antennae having 11-antennomeres, with antennomere 3 being longer than 4 and 5 combined, and with 3 to 6 each with an acute spine on the internal angle

Description

Head: rounded, visible dorsally; front concave; labrumlabrum:
triangular, joined to the clypeus and the oral orifice
large, quadrate, apical margin triangularly emarginate, convex, subcarinate medially; maxillary palps with palpomere 4 oblong, subtruncate at apex; eyeeye:
elongate, slightly prominent, multifaceted; usually slightly kidney-shaped
oval, convex.

Antenna: ½ length of body, filiform, slender, with 11-antennomeres; antennomere 1 short, thick, obconic; 2 shorter and narrower than 1; 3 very long, narrow, as long as 4 to 6 combined; 3 to 6 with internal angle with an acute spine; 7 to 11 cylindrical, shorter and more slender than 1 to 6.

Pronotum: transverse, at widest ½ width of elytra, convex; anterior margin regularly rounded or slightly sinuate in middle; anterior angle oblique, with seta; posterior angle rectangular, with seta; posterior margin sinuate.

Scutellum: triangular.

Elytron: convex; humerus rounded; lateral margin slightly dilated; with 10 rows of shallow punctures; no costae.

Venter: prosternumprosternum:
contains two anterior coxal cavities
sinuate in middle, slightly narrowed between coxae, flat, base dilated, subtruncate (nearly square), projecting forward to partly cover mouth.

Leg: short, robust; femurfemur:
largest part of the leg; more or less cylindrical, attached at base to trochanter and at apex to tibia
fusiform (spindle-shaped); tibiatibia:
variable in length; joins femur and tarsus
straight, sometimes subarcuate basally, obliquely truncate apically; tarsi robust, dilated, tarsomere 1 nearly as wide as others, 4 dilated from base to apex, slightly exceeding lobes of 3; claws simple, divaricate (divided into two sections).
