Synonomys

None.

Type Species

Exothispa reimeri Kolbe.

Diagnosis

Exothispa can be distinguished by the following combination of characters:

  • Large (>17 mm)
  • Lateral margin of pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
or elytra without long, stiff spines
  • Head without frontal horn between antennae
  • Pronotum pronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
with lateral margin straight, with seta in each anterior and posterior angle
  • Elytra at base nearly 2x as wide as pronotum
  • Anterior margin of prosternumprosternum:
    contains two anterior coxal cavities
not projecting forward, not covering mouth

Description

Body glabrous; shining; narrowed anteriorly, widened posteriorly; reddish-brown, mouth, eyes, antennae, and legs black.

Head: elongate; vertexvertex:
occupies the area behind and between the eyes
with 3 sulci; fronsfrons:
upper anterior portion of head capsule above the clypeus
simple; eyeeye:
elongate, slightly prominent, multifaceted; usually slightly kidney-shaped
small, weakly rounded, placed distant from anterior margin of pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
; maxillary palps with apical palpomere ovate, preceding ones thicker.

Antenna: as long as head and pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
combined; thick, with 11-antennomeres; antennomere 1 subglobose, large; 2 to 10 transverse; 8 very short; 11 pointed at apex.

Pronotum: longer than wide; lateral margin straight; anterior angle acute; posterior angle with small tooth; posterior margin bisinuate; glabrous; surface punctate, punctures sparser laterally.

Elytron: at base nearly 2x width of pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
; exterior apical angle rounded; surface lightly punctate-striate; humerus tuberculate, carinate.

Venter: prosternumprosternum:
contains two anterior coxal cavities
narrow between coxae, sinuate posteriorly; mesosternummesosternum:
narrow between middle coxae, separated from metasternum by a transverse suture; forming the anterior part of the middle coxal cavities
with transverse tubercle apically; abdominal sterna conical, impunctate laterally, suture between sterna obsolete medially.

Leg: tibiatibia:
variable in length; joins femur and tarsus
without tooth, curved apically; tarsal claws divergent.
