Dicladispa can be distinguished by the following combination of characters:
Body subparallel or elongate-oval; subconvex; color variable but never metallic blue or green; total length 2.9 to 7.6 mm.
Head: vertexvertex:
occupies the area behind and between the eyes
convex, medial sulcus present, slightly constricted toward pronotumpronotum:
occupies all of dorsal part of the prothorax; in anterior angles or posterior angles there may be a small tubercle or pore with a seta
; eyeeye:
elongate, slightly prominent, multifaceted; usually slightly kidney-shaped
large, convex.
Antenna: reaches to humerus; thickening apically; with 11-antennomeres; antennomere 1 incrassate, without spine; 2 obconic, small; 3 to 6 slender, subcylindrical, subequal in length; 7 to 11 wider, pubescent.
Pronotum: quadrate; lateral margin sinuate, with spines mostly at base, spines variable in configuration; anterior angle rounded, with small tooth; anterior margin curved, without spines; posterior angle acute; posterior margin bisinuate; surface punctate to rugose, some species with setae.
Scutellum: small; quadrate.
Elytron: lateral margin straight or expanding apically, with long spines; exterior apical angle rounded, with spines; apical margin rounded, with spines; humerus angulate, not produced; with 8 rows of punctures plus scutellar row; disc with spines.
Leg: long; slender; femurfemur:
largest part of the leg; more or less cylindrical, attached at base to trochanter and at apex to tibia
thickened basally; tibiatibia:
variable in length; joins femur and tarsus
slightly expanding apically; tarsal claws totally fused, pointed at apex, with basal tooth.
