Quercus rubra L., Sp. Pl. 2: 996 (1753).

Description

Nuts of the red oak occasionally appear in potpourri. Acorns are to 3 cm long, the cup shallow, saucer-shaped, 2-3 cm wide and covering a fifth to a fourth of the nut, or, sometimes, the cup somewhat narrower and deeper and enclosing a third of the somewhat smaller (2-2.5 cm) nut. The corn-cup bears a ring of hairs inside around the scar.

Nativity and distribution

Quercus rubra is native to eastern and central North America.
