Megacyllene robiniae
Classification
Diagnostic Features of Larvae
- Larva. Distinguished by the broadly oval to orbicular spiracles; the coarse abdominal hairs; the posterior edge of the pronotum and pro-eusternum are velvety pubescent. Adapted from Craighead (1923).
Biology and Economic Importance
- The habits of this species have been adequately discussed in literature. It attacks living hard maples (Acer). The larvae during the first year mine beneath the bark, often girdling the branch and causing its death. The second year a deep burrow is made obliquely up and into the heartwood at the end of which the larva pupates. Two years are required to complete the development. Adapted from Craighead (1923).
