Diagnostic Features of Larvae
- Mature larva. Length up to 11 mm; maximum breadth (at prothorax) 1.6 mm. Form cylindrical, extremely slender and slightly tapering posteriorly. Head very strongly transverse, with sides rounded and widest posteriorly (maximum head-width 1.05 mm.); postero-lateral area with a narrow linear, sclerotized, ferruginous area. Genae pale testaceous and bearing numerous long, fine, pale setae, which are curved backward. Mouthframe moderately strongly sclerotized, pale ferruginous. Antenna minute, conical, 3-segmented. Mandible with basal part reddish brown, apical part pitchy. Labrum transversely oval and fringed anteriorly with fine pale setae. One pair of ocelli present; lens round; pigmented spot very large and distinct. Hypostoma smooth, pale testaceous; sutures indistinct. Prothorax with anterior area of pronotum pale testaceous and sparsely setose; posterior area finely longitudinally striate; prosternum micro-granulate. Abdomen with ampullae on segments 3-7 deeply bilobed and very strongly protuberant, the intersegmental skin very long and triangulate. Segments 8 and 9 slightly elongate, cylindrical. Epipleura scarcely protuberant on last three segments. Anal lobes compact, finely setose. Legs minute; unguiculus attenuated. Spiracles of abdomen minute with peritreme broadly oval, pale and feebly sclerotized. Adapted from Duffy (1957).
