Diagnostic Features of Larvae
- Larva. Distinguished from Brachyleptura rubrica by the more prominent ocellus; tarsus shorter than tibia, flattened and arcuate; prosternellar area not distinctly velvety pubescent; tubercles of ampullae fewer, about six in dorsal rows, seventh ampullae bearing only two rows; spiracles sub-orbicular, peritreme dirty-greenish colored.
Biology and Economic Importance
- The larvae feed in decaying pine logs throughout the eastern US and Canada. It is often associated with B. rubrica. The adults have been taken in June and July. Adapted from Craighead (1923).
