Spikelets consist of 4–6 bulblets.
Callus usually with cobwebby hairs at the base but sometimes glabrous.
Glumes persistent, slightly unequal, narrowly lanceolate to ovate, 2–4 mm long (shorter than spikelet), membranous, purplish, keels sparsely scabrid, apices acute. Lower glume 1-veined. Upper glume 3-veined.
Bulblet ca. 2 mm long (not including the elongated green leafy tips which are 5–15 mm long), glabrous, dark purplish, slightly shiny.
