Spikelets solitary, pedicelled, consisting of 6–9 fertile florets with similar-looking though diminished sterile florets at apex, ovate, strongly laterally compressed, 25–40 mm long, disarticulating below each fertile floret at maturity.
Glumes persistent, similar, lanceolate, shorter than spikelet, chartaceous, keeled, apices acuminate. Lower glume 7–9 mm long, 0.9 length of upper glume, 3–7(9)-veined. Upper glume 9–11 mm long, 0.8–0.9 length of adjacent fertile lemma, 5–7-veined.
Fertile florets: rachilla persistent, relatively long, pubescent, callus pubescent, blunt to sharply pointed.
Lemma oblong to lanceolate, 11–14(17) mm long (excluding awn), chartaceous, much thinner on margins, keeled, 7–9-veined, midvein and lateral veins ribbed, surface glabrous or pubescent, apex entire, awn subapical, 4–7 mm long (var. marginatus).
Palea 0.8 length of lemma, keels ciliolate.
Caryopsis oblanceolate, ca. 7 mm long x ca. 1.5 mm wide, brown (sometimes purplish), apex fleshy, hilum linear, same length as caryopsis.
